Door Panel Removal and Re-fitting
Removing the door card is the first step for window regulator work, lock rod adjustments, and any interior restoration. Old clips are brittle — have spares before you start.
Steps to Remove
- Wind the window fully up.
- Remove the window crank by pressing the retaining clip inward with a flathead while pulling the handle outward. It will pop off.
- Remove the door pull handle — typically one Phillips screw under a small cover, then the handle slides forward off its bracket.
- Work around the perimeter of the card with a trim removal tool (or a wide flathead wrapped in tape). The panel is held by plastic clips that press into holes in the door shell.
- Lift the panel up and out — it hooks over the window channel at the top.
While You’re In There
- Inspect the vapor barrier (the plastic sheeting behind the card). Replace it if torn — it keeps water out of the cabin.
- Check the window regulator bolts. They vibrate loose over time.
- Lube window channel felt with silicone spray.
Re-fitting
- Replace any broken clips before reinstalling — old ones shatter rather than flex.
- Hook the top of the panel over the window channel first, then press the clips in around the perimeter.
- The crank handle is the last step. Align the flat tab, press on, and snap the retaining clip.
